The only building in Lambeth with two blue plaques, the last building squatted by Olive Morris, final home of CLR James, windows by legendary artist and designer, the late Jon Daniel. One of the oldest Advice Centres in London. Offices of the Race Today Collective. See how we are still on the Frontline of Brixton and still changing lives

One of London’s Oldest Advice Centres Opens Up Its Unique Brixton History For The First Time.

Brixton Advice Centre is one of the oldest Advice Centres in London, helping people with debt, welfare, housing and other issues since 1966, we empower local people to address the inequalities they experience and to achieve their economic, educational and social potential

Our history is Brixton’s history. We represent all. We work from the former home of the Race Today Collective. Our Open House celebrates the 20th anniversary of unveiling an English Heritage blue plaque to writer and intellectual CLR James. In 2024, still only 2% of plaques celebrate black people’s achievements

We are the only building in Lambeth (except County Hall) to have two blue plaques. The life and work of Darcus Howe’s plaque joined his uncle’s in 2022. We are the last publicly accessible buildings squatted by Olive Morris. Our Icons of Railton Road windows were designed by the late Jon Daniel, who created the Black History Month logo and Afro Supa Hero

We will show the extraordinary impact our advice has on ordinary lives and how that keeps Brixton’s inimitable character. Come and see if you recognise some of our past events, supporters and find out how to join us for future ones. We remain on the front line of our community, ever more vital in the cost of living crisis. We hope to greet old and new supporters and neighbours and collect archive material and memories as we gear up to celebrate our Diamond Jubilee in 2026

Brixton Advice Centre: Serving the community since 1966. Our mission is a vibrant and inclusive Lambeth, where all members of the community have the confidence and skills necessary to navigate the challenges and difficulties that may appear in their lives. We empower local people to address the inequalities they experience and to achieve their economic, educational and social potential. We do this by acting as a force for good through our own range of services, by lobbying for change, and by working collaboratively with socially responsible partners to improve our local community together
